Biogenic Methane Sampling

March 25, 2014

To continue our goal of characterizing biogenic methane, Danielle made a trip to Penn State to sample methane from the rumen of a cow (collaboration with Dr. Alex Hristov). The Hristov lab studies the nutrition of dairy cows, and methane can often be an indicator of various nutritional parameters. The rumen is home to methanogenic microbes, and one cow can produce approximately 200 L methane per day. Methods from geochemistry and animal science were combined to sample and analyze this methane.
